President's Message

Happy New Year!

Thank you to all who attended our November event at Barnes & Cone Architectural Masonry. Attendees were treated to a tour of the facility including unit production, finishing, testing, and quality control. The tour gave me an appreciation of the quality of the company’s products and their innovative approach to product development which encompasses much more than the masonry itself. Barnes & Cone is on the front lines of cutting-edge developments in the masonry industry, and it showed! I would like to thank Rick Roach and Barnes & Cone for hosting this event. I would also like to thank Nick Carparelli for coordinating this event with Rick. Great job!

Membership renewals having been coming in steadily over the last couple months, and we thank you for your continued support. If you have not renewed, please take a few minutes to visit the Membership page on our website. The Design and Installation Awards season is in full swing. Please note the deadline for entries is 1/23/13. Contact any of our board members if you have questions about the Awards Program. We are looking forward to a great selection of projects this year.

Program description:

ACI 330R-08 – The Gold Standard of Concrete Parking Lot Design

The volatile nature of oil prices along with production factors affecting the cost of asphalt are just a few of the reasons concrete pavements are proving to retailers to be a sound investment in today’s marketplace. Many designers in the Northeast are still unfamiliar with proper concrete parking lot design using ACI 330R-08, The Guide to the Design and Construction of Concrete Parking Lots.

This seminar will take a look at the growth in the use of concrete for parking lots across the country along with discussing the basis of the design guide, providing an overview of the sections of the guide and comparing other commonly used design procedures to that of ACI 330 R-08. Also discussed will be why retail owners are requiring ACI 330 designed concrete alternates on their projects and what it means for the concrete industry. This seminar is intended for both industry personnel and the design community.

Architects and engineers earn one Professional Development Hour upon completion of this program. This seminar is registered with the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems.

Presented by:

Doug O’Neill, LEED AP, Senior Director - National Resources for the (NRMCA) National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. Doug is the former Executive Director of the NYCPC and has been involved in the cement and concrete industries for 20+ years.
