President's Message

Thank you to all who attended our October event featuring Ron Vaughn. Attendees were treated to an excellent presentation and demonstration on the merits of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) including pertinent field tests. The weather really cooperated that day and we had a great turnout. I would like to thank Sam Conley and Whitacre Engineering for hosting the event and Gary Markinson for donating the SCC. Greg Novitzki and Tom Hitchings were also instrumental in putting this event together. Great job!

Membership renewals have been coming in steadily over the last month, and we thank you for your continued support. If you have not renewed, please take a few minutes to visit the Membership page

Speaking of the website, the Design and Installation Awards Program instructions and entry forms are now available on the Awards page. Separate application forms for concrete and masonry are now available. Please contact any of the ACI CNY Board Members if you have questions. We are looking forward to a great selection of projects this year.

It’s hard to believe we only have one event left in 2012. Please join us on 11/14 at Barnes & Cone in Syracuse. Rick Roach and the folks at Barnes & Cone will lead us on a tour of their facility and provide attendees with a presentation during the dinner portion of the event. Please note the registration time of 2:30 PM. Dinosaur BBQ was a big hit in Liverpool, so we have asked them to cater for us again. I hope to see you all there!

Please note that we will not be back at the DoubleTree Hotel until January. Our full schedule of events is at right.

Christopher N. Latreille, P.E.

Program description:

The more familiar designers are with concrete masonry, the more effective their design of masonry structures can be. This block plant tour will demonstrate how concrete masonry is manufactured and the various properties, colors, shapes, sizes, and textures that are available for design.

If you are “seasoned” enough to have been practicing back in the day when concrete masonry strengths went from gross area to net, or when ASTM eliminated Type 1 Moisture Control Units, and you thought these were big changes, you haven’t seen anything until you see what the recent changes to ASTM C90 are going to mean to your designs. Part of this tour will be examples of what you should be prepared to see on your jobsites.

Barnes & Cone’s plant is still housed in the original 1926 building while the manufacturing equipment has been continually updated over the years to facilitate production of the newest and most innovative concrete masonry units. Please note: We’ll be walking around equipment and outside in the aggregate areas and between buildings; we strongly urge you to dress appropriately. Wear work boots and bring your hard hat.

The tour will cover the following:

-History of masonry manufacturing in New York State
-Raw materials used in concrete masonry
-Mixing raw materials used in concrete masonry
-Molding concrete masonry units
-Curing concrete masonry units
-Splitting and cubing concrete masonry units
-Quality control in block plants
-Fabricating custom shapes
-Cleaning concrete masonry units
-Industry resources

After you have been served Dinosaur BBQ, we’ll discuss the changes you are likely to see from the new ASTM C90 Standard Specification for Loadbearing Concrete Masonry Units.
