President's Message

Thank you to all who attended our September event featuring Ken Hover. We had a great turnout for an excellent presentation on fly ash. I was again impressed with Ken Hover’s ability to explain a technical topic in a very transparent and entertaining manner. I don’t think I am alone in recalling being caught in the “Perfect Storm” of learning and laughter. Thank you, Ken! We hope to see you again soon.

Membership renewal notices have been sent out so please take a minute to renew if you haven’t already. Please also consider being a chapter and/or banquet sponsor. It’s not too early to start thinking about outstanding concrete and masonry projects for our upcoming Design & Installation Awards program. Instructions and entry forms will be sent out in the next month so stay tuned.

We are going to mix things up a little bit this Fall. Our next event is a presentation and live demonstration on Self-Consolidating Concrete at Whitacre Engineering’s rebar fabrication facility in Liverpool on the afternoon of October 17th. Please note the registration time of 3:00 pm. Dinosaur BBQ is catering so you won’t want to miss this one. I hope to see you all there!

Please note that we will not be back at the Doubletree hotel until January. Our full schedule of events is at right.

Program description:

Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is a highly flowable, non-segregating concrete that can spread into place, fill formwork, and encapsulate very congested reinforcement without any mechanical vibration. As a high-performance concrete, SCC delivers these attractive benefits while maintaining concrete's customary mechanical properties and durability characteristics (see photos at right).

ACI CNY is hosting a live demonstration and presentation on this exciting technology at Whitacre Engineering’s fabrication facility in Liverpool. As part of our event, SCC will be placed into a formwork structure that is heavily congested with rebar. The placement will show how SCC can rapidly and effectively flow around the rebar without vibration, and more importantly, without segregation. During the placement, quality control testing will be performed with explanations of which flow properties are desirable and why.

Following the demonstration, Ron Vaughn, ACI Fellow and Senior Sales Engineer for Northeast Solite, will present applications and common uses of SCC. His one-hour presentation will cover the history of SCC overseas and in the U.S. Mr. Vaughn will also discuss common test methods including: ASTM C1610 - Column Segregation; ASTM C1611 - Slump Flow, VSI, and T-20; ASTM C1621 - J-Ring; and ASTM C1758 - Fabricating Test Specimens, Air Content & Density Samples. One PDH will be provided.

Ronald E. Vaughn is a Senior Sales Engineer at Northeast Solite in Saugerties, NY. He was previously the Business Development Manager at Atlantic Testing Laboratories in Clifton Park, NY. Prior to that engagement, he was the Northeast Region Technical Services Manager for W.R. Grace in Cambridge, MA.

Mr. Vaughn has many years of experience along with awards and citations from ACI. Among these are the ACI Chapter Activities Award (1993), his election to ACI Fellow (1994), and an ACI Certification Award for Outstanding Service (2007). He is an active member of: ACI Certification Committees for Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1 (C610), Concrete Construction Special Inspector (C630), and the Concrete Transportation Construction Inspector. He is also involved in other ACI Committees including: Proportioning Concrete (211), SCC (237), Concrete Bridge Construction, Maintenance, and Repair (345), and Training Programs (E905). He is also the Treasurer of the Eastern NY Chapter of ACI.

Demonstration credits:

ACI CNY would like to thank Tom Hitchings with BASF and Greg Novitzki with the NY Concrete Promotion Council for organizing the demonstration and speaker. We would also like to thank Sam Conley with Whitacre Engineering for hosting the event and donating the rebar and formwork, and Gary Markinson with Saunders Concrete for donating the SCC.
