President's Message
by Christopher N. Latreille, P.E.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and merry holiday season. We closed out 2011 with an excellent dinner program. Thank you to all who attended Nick Carparelli’s presentation on Thermal Performance of Masonry Wall Systems.

Now that 2012 has begun, we have reset our membership roster. If you have not already done so, please renew your ACI CNY membership prior to January 18th to continue taking advantage of member rates for the rest of the season. Renewing is easy, and the ACI CNY website offers the convenience of online payment. As always, please feel free to contact Board Members with any questions you may have about membership renewal, sponsorship, or the new website.

The Design and Installation Awards are in full swing. Last week, the ACI CNY Board met to discuss the awards submittal instructions because over the years we have received multiple requests to allow the submission of projects from outside of the Central New York counties. Ron Vaughn, Secretary of ACI Eastern New York, was gracious enough to join us to discuss this important topic. We agreed to change this submission criterion for this year to allow the submission of projects from neighboring counties on a case-by-case basis as long as the following requirements are met:

A. The submitter must be a member of ACI CNY.

B. The submitter must contact a member of the board from the neighboring chapter to request permission to submit the project. Formal concurrence in writing from the neighboring ACI chapter must be submitted with the awards application.

C. The project must meet all other submission criteria indicated in the instructions.

If you have any questions, please contact Awards Chairs Greg Novitzki and Nick Carparelli.

We begin the year with a lunch program, and we are happy to have Dorothy Harris from the International Code Council discuss the International Green Construction Code. We are pleased to have Ms. Harris present this pertinent topic as sustainable design has become a more integral part of the concrete and masonry industry. Please join us at the DoubleTree Hotel at Noon on January 18th. I hope to see you all there!

About the International Green Construction Code:

The International Green Construction Code (IgCC) is the first model green code for traditional and high-performance commercial buildings and residential buildings more than three stories high. It will provide guidance for safe and sustainable building design and construction, including energy and water efficiency, site impact, building waste, and materials. It is the first time code officials, owners, and designers will have an integrated regulatory framework to put into practice that meets the goal of safe and sustainable construction for the design of new and existing buildings.

The IgCC is useable, enforceable, and adoptable. Jurisdictions already have adopted public versions of the code. It fills the need of governments across the U.S. and around the globe clamoring for a green code to complement voluntary rating systems. Published by the International Code Council, the IgCC is expected to be available in March. Click here for a summary of final action changes to the IgCC.

The International Code Council is a member-focused association dedicated to helping the building safety community and construction industry provide safe and sustainable construction through the development of codes and standards used in the design, build, and compliance process. Most U.S. communities and many global markets choose the International Codes.

Presenter:

Dorothy M. Harris is currently employed by the International Code Council, Inc. as the Vice President, State & Local Government Relations. In this capacity, Ms. Harris has supervision of six Government Relations Managers with responsibility and oversight of 25 states, in the implementation and support of the International Codes.
