President's Message
by Christopher N. Latreille, P.E.

Thank you to all who attended the facility tour at Nucor Steel in Auburn. The magnitude and scale of the steel-making process can only be fully realized when red hot number six bar is flying past at 30 miles an hour. It reminded me of something out of Star Wars. I would also like to thank the staff at Nucor for providing an excellent and very informative tour.

The Design and Installation Awards Program will be in full swing in the next few weeks. I will make a few announcements regarding entry and submission requirements during our next dinner event on November 16th. Instructions and entry forms will be provided shortly after via email. You can also visit www.acicny.org for information about the awards program. Photos and descriptions of winners from previous years are also available. These are a great resource if you are looking for submission ideas, so please feel free to browse them. We look forward to your project entries.

As noted, our next event will occur on November 16th at the DoubleTree Hotel in East Syracuse. Nick Carparelli will present Thermal Performance of Masonry Wall Systems. Nick has presented for our group many times over the years, and we are happy to have him back. This program provides one credit/hour. Please also note that we do not have an event planned for December since we know the holiday season is a busy time for everyone. However, we will pick things back up in January!

Program description:

This presentation is based on the new Thermal Catalog of Concrete Masonry Assemblies, prepared by the National Concrete Masonry Association under a grant from the NCMA Education and Research Foundation. The contributions of concrete masonry’s thermal mass to energy efficient structures will be highlighted. The presentation will also introduce several strategies for insulating both single and multi-wythe construction. In addition, attendees will receive an overview of various methods of compliance for masonry assemblies with respect to the 2010 New York State Energy Conservation Construction Code.

As a result, participants will:

1. Have a greater understanding of the ways single wythe masonry assemblies can meet current Energy Conservation Construction Codes

2. Have a better sense of how concrete masonry’s thermal mass contributes to energy efficiency

3. Have increased awareness of various strategies for insulating a variety of concrete masonry assemblies

4. Have a better understanding of the methods used and the tools available to determine compliance with Energy Conservation Construction Codes

This program is registered with AIACES; attendees will earn 1 HSW credit. This program is also accredited by the NYS Department of State for 1 hour of in-service training for code enforcement officials.

The NCMA Thermal Catalog is available in hard copy, or as a complimentary PDF at www.nyscma.org.
