President's Message

Hello ACI of Central New York! I’m thrilled to be greeting you as your next President. I hope your summers have been going well!

I’d first like to officially welcome Dan Beal of Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt and Shawn Murphy of Murnane Building Contractors to the board. It is thanks to the efforts and enthusiasm of volunteers like them that we are able to keep our organization together year after year.

I’d also like to thank Gary Markinson, our past president, for the work and dedication that he gave to the chapter over the last year. Gary’s tenure as president certainly has been an example I’d like to follow.

It’s almost time for our fall and winter program to start up and I couldn’t be more excited to share with you some of the things that are in the works. We are very fortunate to again welcome Dr. Ken Hover to start our year off with a bang. Ken is always engaging and is world renown for his expertise in all things concrete. We are also hoping to do a hands-on event in October that will shed some light on a cutting edge sector of the masonry industry! Our tentative schedule of events is as follows, so be sure to mark your calendars now, and stay tuned for more information! Hope to see you at all of them!

October 19

November 16
January 18
February 15
April 5 – Awards Banquet

We’ll also be exploring other ways to reach out to you…so I am very proud to invite you to connect with us on LinkedIn!

Our board is hard at work trying to make this the best year yet!

Program description:

Every load of concrete arrives on site brimming with potential uses, shapes, and finishes. It also arrives in tandem with a humble delivery ticket that, upon closer inspection, is full of useful information. Sadly, that multi-color form doesn’t usually get much attention.  But, to be able to unlock the whole story of each load of concrete you have to know where to look, and you have to know how to crack the secret code! Critical information includes identifying volumes, yields, admixtures, and how much water can be added in the field before you exceed the approved water-to-cement ratio.   The ticket also tells the batch time, which is important for predicting slump loss and setting time. What information could be camouflaged on the ticket that you aren’t aware of? Could it be pivotal on your future project? It’s not just the concrete that is covered by standard specs, but as we shall see the ticket itself is the subject of the ASTM requirements that are written into virtually every concrete project.  So even though the humble ticket rarely gets the respect it is due...
