President's Message

Happy New Year to everyone! I wanted to take my turn to wish everyone a prosperous New Year in 2016. It is my understanding that with the investment New York State has made in Upstate New York, specifically our county and city, that 2016 just may turn out to be one of the best construction seasons in many years.

I also want to thank John Pillar for an outstanding presentation in November on epoxy doweling into concrete. I know a lot of our membership benefitted greatly from it, and I look forward to John’s contributions to our chapter and the local engineering community in the future. Thank you again, John.

Fast forward to January 20th as we look forward to an extremely interesting and topical presentation on synthetic fibers replacing steel reinforcing of various kinds. Our presenter is an old friend, Dave Orzel of FRC Orzel, formally of Propex Industries/Fibermesh. I believe Dave single handedly introduced macro fibers to our region, and is directly responsible for the increase in the use of, and confidence in, all kinds of fiber reinforcing by our local engineering firms. This presentation offers credits to engineers, so please put this event on your calendar and register now.

Once again I wish you all a prosperous New Year, and I look forward to your participation with our chapter in 2016.

Program description:

Join Presenter Dave Orzel for this informative presentation on synthetic fiber reinforcement worth one PDH!

The seminar is designed for architects, engineers, contractors, and owners. It is directed at proving synthetic fibers can replace temperature and shrinkage steel reinforcement. Additionally, the program will illustrate that macro-synthetic fiber is a superior method of reinforcement in most slab on ground applications.

Learning objectives:

-Mathematical analysis comparing synthetic fibers to replace temperature and shrinkage steel reinforcement.

-Prove macro-synthetic fiber is a superior method of reinforcement.

-Review the 4-C’s formula for fiber selection.

-Discuss methods to determine sufficient quantities and types of fiber for a variety of concrete projects.

Presented by:

David A. Orzel - Manager – FRC Orzel, LLC

Dave obtained his Mechanical Engineering Degree at SUNY Buffalo. Dave’s 34 years of experience in construction includes  research and development, physical testing and fire-testing of construction products, code approvals, product trials, and field project experience.

Dave’s career began at National Gypsum Corporation as a Research Engineer. His responsibilities included structural testing and fire testing of the Corporations’ products, as well as testing for outside companies. The position also required technical support of sales, and direct interaction with specifiers.

Dave took the position of Director of Technical Support for Martin Fireproofing Incorporated, a national manufacturer of specialty concrete roof planking and Fibroplank structural cement wood fiber planks (Portland cement and wood fiber matrix). Because of their uniqueness, these products required extensive promotional sales and product support, and development of test data to satisfy the design and specification community.

Dave then co-founded MetRepCo, a manufacturer’s representative firm promoting construction products throughout Upstate NY. Dave successfully ran MetRepCo for nine years. In 2005, Dave sold MetRepCo and began to work with Propex Concrete Systems, first as a Territory Manager selling fiber reinforcement for concrete, and then as a national promotional manager for geotextiles and fiber reinforcement. With his extensive national construction product experience, Dave worked with and trained some of the largest specifying firms, government agencies, and contractors in the country.

At the start of 2013, Dave started FRC Orzel, LLC – specifically focusing on fiber reinforcement of concrete in his local market area. Dave has been involved with millions of square feet of concrete flatwork, shotcrete applications, and precast work in NY, PA, and OH, and has been responsible for tremendous growth in the use of macro-synthetic fiber and steel fiber for reinforcement of concrete.
