President's Message

This year is flying by already, and every day that passes this winter is one day closer to spring. Hopefully when you are reading this, you’re not looking out at Lake Effect!

First, I must thank Dave Orzel of FRC Orzel for his presentation on fibers last month. The presentation answered so many questions I had about fibers, and when they are appropriate to use, and in what application. I am going to ask Dave to be a regular as there is so much more to be understood about fibers, so stay tuned.

This month is going to be great! Our long time Board Member and friend, Ken Tiss of SUNY ESF, has taken the reins on this one. Our meeting will be held at SUNY ESF’s Baker Laboratory in Room 408. We will have food from the Dinosaur BBQ Restaurant. The format will be a roundtable discussion with some distinguished members of the construction community. We will have students in attendance to listen and learn about our industry. The topic will revolve around ethics and issue resolution. Our panel will be made up of a contractor, an engineer, a testing lab administrator, a prominent construction attorney, and a concrete ready mix safety director, and the discussion will be moderated by Ken Tiss.

And did I say we will have Dinosaur BBQ?

Please refer to the Events page on our website for details and to sign up. You will need to email Ken separately to get your parking pass for the evening. This will be one you won’t want to miss!

Please also stay tuned for more information about next month’s event and the world famous Design and Installation Awards Banquet in April.

This is an evening in which our Chapter will interact with the college students of SUNY ESF’s Construction Management program and Syracuse University’s Civil Engineering program. The purpose of the roundtable discussion will be to present real world issues that we face daily in our industry to a panel of industry experts representing various perspectives of the industry. The resulting discussion will help the students to learn the types of issues that we face on a daily basis, how the issues are viewed and how resolution to the issues is accomplished. The focus will be on how ethics should enter the professional world and the panelists will provide examples of real industry problems and their outcomes.
