President's Message

Hello All,

Chris Latreille, with Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis, started 2015 off for ACI CNY with an excellent talk on BIM.  We learned that Building Information Modeling is being used by designers and then by contractors on many projects in New York State.  The nearly “standing room only” crowd that showed up had to be asked to leave, or I think they would still be discussing its uses with Chris!

This month, we have the distinct pleasure of having one of the leading researchers in evaluation and rehabilitation of concrete bridges with CFRP composites coming to speak to our group.  Riyad S. Aboutaha, PhD, F-ACI, Associate Professor, Director, Civil Engineering Program at Syracuse University will be presenting “Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites in Civil Infrastructure - Research into Practice."  Our transportation infrastructure in New York State is in need of help and rehabilitation and this methodology looks very promising. 

Please register now for this meeting so we can get a more accurate count to the hotel.  Remember, there will be no meeting in March and our Awards Banquet will be held on Wednesday, April 1st, at the DoubleTree.

Program description:

Corrosion of steel reinforcing bars in concrete is the primary limit state for concrete structures in corrosive environments, particularly transportation and industrial facilities. Corrosion of rebars limits the service life of structures, and in some cases turns a durability problem into a serious structural deficiency.

In addition to their corrosion resistance, FRP composites are non-magnetic, and exhibit very high strength to weight ratio. In recent years, FRP rebars have been successfully used for construction of major tunnels and highway structures. In addition, FRP modular panels have proven to be a cost effective solution for replacement of deteriorated steel-reinforced concrete bridge decks in corrosive environments.

This seminar will present applications of three main types of FRP composites used in renewal and construction of civil infrastructure. They include: (1) Carbon FRP composite sheets and plates for rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete bridge elements, (2) Glass FRP modular bridge deck panels, and (3) GFRP reinforcing bars for concrete structures.

Dr. Riyad Aboutaha is an associate professor of structural engineering and director of the civil engineering program at Syracuse University. He is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute.

Dr. Aboutaha has over 33 years of construction and research experience. In the last 25 years, he has been researching the use of new materials for renewal of civil infrastructure. Dr. Aboutaha has offered numerous seminars and workshops on evaluation and rehabilitation of concrete bridges with CFRP composites, including several for the U.S.A. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). He published the first international guide on assessment, evaluation, and rehabilitation of concrete bridges with CFRP composites.

In addition, he completed major research projects on the GFRP bar ComBAR for Schöck Bauteile GmbH of Baden-Baden, Germany, and others on the durability of wearing surfaces for FRP bridge decks for NYSDOT. Dr. Aboutaha’s current research interest is in the area of economy of preventive maintenance of concrete bridges.
